International Women's Day

A) Find out about the history of the International Women's Day

-Why does it exist?

Because on that date in 1848, the Prussian king, faced with an armed uprising, had promised many reforms, including an unfulfilled one of votes for women.

- What do we celebrate?

The International Women's Day, the 8th March,
we celebrate the women's right to vote.

- List some important dates and/or events.

: the Prussian king, faced with an armed uprising, had promised many reforms, including an unfulfilled one of votes for women.

The most memorable IWD day was in 1917, because it was the first women revolution.
In 1960 was the 50th anniversary of IWD.

B) Choose three famous women of the English-speaking countries and summarize the information you find about them.

Joan Ganz Cooney (1929 - present) :: Woman in the Arts
Without this woman, kids around the world would never have known Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch or Elmo. She's the driving force behind Sesame Street, as well as the network it aired on, The Children's Television Workshop.

Simone de Beauvoir (1908 - 1986) :: Woman in the Arts
Talk about girl power! A French novelist and philosopher, her novel The Second Sex is one of the most widely read pieces of feminist literature in the world.

Marie Curie (1867 - 1934) :: Woman in Science
Marie Curie is one of the first female scientists to have worldwide fame and is the most famous woman in physics. She won two Nobel Prizes - one for physics in 1903 and one for chemistry in 1911.


C) Oral presentation: Tell the class about the information you have found and introduce the three famous women you have chosen.
